Derek Gill

Principal Economist & Head of Public Good, NZ Institute of Economic Research

Derek Gill is currently Principal Economist and Head of Public Good at the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) and a Research Associate at the Institute of Governance and Policy Studies at Victoria University. 

In recent years, he has extensively researched, taught and published on a range of public policy, regulatory and management issues, while based at the School of Government at VUW.  His current research in partnership with the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) includes a comparative study of Regulatory Management Systems and a review of International Regulatory Cooperation in the Asia Pacific region.

His previous experience spans a range of senior public service roles, including as the general manager at State Services Commission with responsibility for the NZ public management system, with the OECD, positions in the NZ Treasury including Chief Macroeconomic Forecaster, as well as a diplomat based in Washington DC.
