Here's what you read in 2023

20 December 2023

From tangled political families to the basics of Chinese or Asian name structures, here's what you were reading on the Asia Media Centre this year. We've highlighted some of our most-read articles and loosely grouped them for a bit of summer reading.

Political dynasties of Asia

In some democracies around the world, political family dynasties are inescapable. Families who have been interwoven with the political world throughout a country’s history leave their mark on the system – and the people they govern.

Earlier this year, we kicked off a short series looking at some of these dynasties in Asia. They certainly caught your eyes, with a history of dynasties in the Philippines being one of our most-read stories this year. In case you missed our other ones, you can read up on similar dynasties in Thailand and Indonesia

Elections

2023 was a big year for elections in some parts of Asia – and here in Aotearoa too. The Thailand election was a rollercoaster to watch, as political wrangling and court action drew the election process far past voting day. Our coverage and commentary from experts were popular reads:

Who's who in the 2023 Thailand election?

Thailand's winds of change

Thailand's new prime minister: Srettha Thavisin

And closer to home, coverage of trends in Chinese-Kiwi voters proved an insightful read ahead of the general election in October.

Resources

At its core, the Asia Media Centre is a resource for those reporting on (or just interested in!) Asia. No surprise then that a series of explainers usually top our list of most-read articles:

A basic guide to Chinese names

A guide to using Asian names

Five things Māori and Asian cultures have in common

Notable mentions

Every year, we have some stories stand out above the rest. Maybe you read them yourself, or maybe it's time for you to catch up on a couple of our most popular stories:
