RNZ Offers New Scholarships

6 December 2023

RNZ ASIA JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP:

  • RNZ will offer TWO scholarships in 2024 to students from an Asian background. There may be a third depending on the quality of applicants.

  • Students are eligible from any Asian background, though it is worth noting that RNZ's Asia project has started with the two largest Asian groups: Chinese and Indian.

  • Students must apply in writing by February 1, 2024, to Elliott Samuels, RNZ Asia, PO Box 2209, Auckland 1140 or by email to elliott.samuels@rnz.co.nz (subject line should read : RNZ Asia scholarship application 2024)

  • Applications should include the following items:

  • An updated CV;

  • An essay of up to 400 words on the current state of Asian representation in New Zealand media, identifying specific ways the applicant believes they can increase and/or improve media contributions about and for the Asian communities in New Zealand should their scholarship application be accepted; and

  • Up to three samples of content you’ve written/produced that align with the key objectives of RNZ Asia (see more here in English and here in Chinese).

  • The scholarship will provide payment of one year's fees up to $8,000NZ direct to the recipient.

  • The preferred candidates would be in the final year of a three year journalism major undergrad degree,or undertaking a one-year postgraduate course. However, RNZ will consider other applications depending on the quality of candidates.

  • The scholarship would be open to students applying to a journalism course at any tertiary institution in NZ.

  • The RNZ Asia scholarship focuses on NZ citizens or permanent residents due to the programme’s long-term goals. Established with support from the Public Interest Journalism Fund, the scholarship will reduce the financial burden associated with a post-graduate degree in journalism for students of Asian heritage so that they’re encouraged to explore opportunities in New Zealand’s media industry and contribute an Asian perspective to mainstream news organisations nationwide.

  • Successful applicants would be also offered two-week internship/work experience at RNZ, in either the RNZ News or RNZ Asia team, depending on location and availability.
