The numbers: Asian-language enrolments in NZ schools (2007-2016)

The issue of second-language learning in schools has been a recurring topic in New Zealand media in recent years.

Here’s a look at the number of New Zealand students learning an Asian second language, based on figures shown from the Ministry of Education’s Education Counts website.

The graphs show total student numbers in New Zealand. At primary level, the time spent studying the language ranges from less than 15 hours per year to more than 30 hours.
