Doing business in the Philippines: Tips for New Zealanders

6 July 2018

Rachel Strevens, co-founder and CEO of fintech company Invsta, shares some advice for New Zealand businesses looking to set up in the Philippines.

“The Philippines: It’s a huge opportunity, no doubt about it, but it has really got its own intricacies. And I think if you were looking to come into the Philippines, it’s something you need to be very aware of.

“From what I’ve seen, I think it would be really important to get somebody you can partner with and get an understanding of the local culture and some of those nuances.

“There’s a lot of different things to get your head around, and one of the things that is interesting for me is the potential corruption that may be around, and how you go about dealing with that.

“There’s a whole lot of different things like that we’re not used to from a New Zealand perspective, so it’s important to get an understanding of how that can work and how to navigate around some of those hurdles if you were looking to come into this market.”

Rachel Strevens was one of five New Zealand tech entrepreneurs who spent a week in Manila in June 2018 as part of the ASEAN Young Business Leaders Initiative. Read her full interview here.
